Why Satellites Are Vulnerable in a Space Conflict

Satellites have become part of daily life, even when we do not notice them. They support navigation, communications, weather services and emergency response. This makes them valuable, but it also makes disruption a serious concern.
BBC Future reports that satellite systems can be affected in several ways. A cyberattack can interrupt a service. Radio signals can also be interfered with. In 2022, a cyberattack disrupted commercial satellite modems in Ukraine and parts of Central Europe. The event showed that problems in orbit can have effects on the ground.
The biggest long-term danger may be debris. When an object breaks up in orbit, many fragments can remain there for years. More fragments increase the chance of further collisions. This chain reaction is often called the Kessler Syndrome.
The story is not a prediction that space conflict is unavoidable. Instead, it asks governments and companies to think about stronger, more reliable satellite networks. Protecting these systems matters because modern society depends on them.
