Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. After this date, newly released titles will only be available as digital downloads through the PlayStation Store and digital retailers.
The decision reflects changing consumer habits. Digital downloads now represent approximately 80% of Sony's full-game software sales. Digital purchases offer convenienceplayers can buy games instantly without visiting stores or changing discs when switching between titles.
However, the shift has drawbacks. Physical discs can be collected, shared, or resold, while digital games are tied to user accounts and cannot be transferred. Additionally, modern games require significant storage space, which may force players to delete older titles or purchase additional storage.
Sony is also closing the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita systems, beginning in select markets in 2026 and expanding worldwide by July 2027. These older consoles cannot support modern security requirements.
