The incident occurred in Koktokay town when the skier, returning to their hotel, spotted one of these rare animals. Excited by the sighting, the tourist left their vehicle to take photos of the elusive creature.
Unfortunately, this decision led to an attack. The snow leopard, likely feeling threatened by the close approach, mauled the tourist. Video footage showed the injured person lying in the snow with the leopard nearby. Bystanders later helped the tourist to safety.
Local authorities have responded by increasing safety patrols and awareness campaigns. They urge the public to maintain a safe distance from wild animals and report sightings to the police. Snow leopards, protected in China, are rarely seen and even more rarely attack humans. With only 4,000 to 6,500 left worldwide, these animals are a symbol of China's high-altitude ecosystems.
