Prada, the renowned Italian luxury brand, has announced a new line of limited-edition footwear inspired by India's traditional Kolhapuri sandals. This move comes after the company faced criticism for allegedly copying the sandal's design without acknowledgment.
The fashion house plans to produce 2,000 pairs of these sandals in Maharashtra and Karnataka, two states in India known for their Kolhapuri sandal craftsmanship. Prada will collaborate with local artisans and state-backed organizations to create these high-end versions of the traditional footwear.
Set to launch in February 2026, these exclusive sandals will be priced at $939 per pair. They will be available for purchase online and in select Prada stores worldwide. As part of this initiative, some Indian artisans will receive specialized training, including a three-year program in Italy, to enhance their skills in luxury shoemaking.
