For the first time, Taiwan has more pet cats than dogs. According to a Ministry of Agriculture survey, the cat population reached 1,742,033 last year, a significant 32.8% increase from 2023. Meanwhile, the dog population decreased slightly by 1.2% to 1,462,528.
Department of Animal Welfare Director Chiang Wen-chuan explained that this trend reflects broader social changes. With more single-person households and smaller urban living spaces, cats are increasingly seen as more suitable pets than dogs.
Interestingly, while households with dogs still slightly outnumber those with cats, more families are keeping multiple cats. This has contributed to the overall rise in the feline population.
Pet registration rates have improved for both animals. Dog registration increased from 69.5% in 2021 to 77.2% last year, while cat registration rose from 58.45% in 2023 to 66.48%. However, some owners remain unaware that cat registration became mandatory following amendments to the Animal Protection Act in December 2024. The ministry emphasized the need for greater public awareness and continued efforts to reduce stray animal populations.
