High divers are competing in the River Seine in Paris, jumping from a platform approximately 20 metres above the water near the Eiffel Tower. The event is part of the European Aquatics Championships, taking place in Paris from July 31 to August 16, 2026.
The competition represents an important milestone for a river that Paris has worked to restore to public life. Swimming in the Seine was officially banned in 1923 due to pollution and dangerous river traffic. Before the 2024 Olympics, Paris invested heavily in reducing sewage and improving stormwater management. Public swimming areas opened in 2025.
Challenges remain, however. Training was temporarily paused when hydrocarbon traces were discovered upstream, though officials confirmed the affected area was treated. The incident highlights how outdoor sports depend on environmental conditions.
The event also reflects the river's changing identity. Once associated mainly with transport and tourism, the Seine is now becoming a recreational space. City Hall reported that about 70,000 people used the designated swimming areas in July 2026, demonstrating growing public interest.
