Parents Misjudge Teens AI Use

New studies from the Pew Research Center and Common Sense Media highlight a clear gap between what parents think teens do with AI and what teens report. Pew surveyed 1,458 US teens ages 13-17 and their parents. While 64% of teens said they use chatbots, only 51% of parents believed their child used AI. Pew also found that four out of ten parents have never discussed AI with their children.
Teens often use AI for practical tasks: looking things up, researching, and getting help with maths or writing. About one in ten teens said they do all or most of their schoolwork with AI support. Many teens also use AI for entertainment.
Some uses worry adults more. Pew reported that 12% of teens use AI for advice or emotional support and 16% for casual conversation. Parents were especially concerned about emotional support. Experts say families should navigate AI together by asking questions and paying attention to red flags if AI replaces human relationships.
