The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced its support for a new female crash test dummy design. This new model is intended to replace the current dummy, which is based primarily on male body characteristics. The change comes in response to statistics showing that women face a higher risk of injury and death in car accidents compared to men.
The new female dummy is designed to more accurately represent the female body, with differences in the neck, collarbone, pelvis, and legs. It's equipped with over 150 sensors to measure impact during crash tests. This development could lead to significant improvements in vehicle safety standards for women.
However, the implementation of this new dummy faces some challenges. Some American automakers are skeptical, arguing that it might exaggerate injury risks. Additionally, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety continues to support the current dummies. Despite these obstacles, lawmakers from both major political parties have expressed support for the new crash test rules and safety requirements.
