Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lander has achieved a significant milestone by successfully landing on the moon. This marks only the second time a private company has accomplished a soft moon landing.
The Blue Ghost, comparable in size to a compact car, is equipped with four legs and carries ten scientific instruments. It used 21 thrusters to guide itself to a precise landing near an ancient volcanic vent in Mare Crisium, a large basin on the moon's Earth-facing side.
This achievement is crucial for the future of space exploration. It demonstrates that private companies can play a vital role in lunar missions, potentially accelerating scientific research and paving the way for future human missions to the moon. NASA, which paid for this delivery, hopes this success will help create a sustainable commercial lunar economy led by American companies.
