Maldives Introduces Generational Tobacco Ban

The Maldives has taken a groundbreaking step by implementing a nationwide generational tobacco ban. This new law prohibits individuals born on or after January 1, 2007, from using, purchasing, or selling tobacco products within the country.
The health ministry announced that this ban reflects the government's strong commitment to safeguarding young people from the harmful effects of tobacco use. It applies to all forms of tobacco, and retailers are required to verify customers' age before making a sale.
This move follows the country's general vaping ban introduced last year, which was seen as a positive step towards creating a tobacco-free generation. Ahmed Afaal, vice chair of the archipelago's tobacco control board, emphasized that these measures aim to protect younger generations from addictive processes that harm their health.
Interestingly, the ban will also apply to tourists visiting the Maldives. However, officials argue that this won't negatively impact tourism, as visitors are primarily attracted to the country's beautiful beaches, sea, and fresh air rather than the ability to smoke.
