A devoted dog named Bob spent 10 years living at a São Paulo cemetery where his owner was buried, inspiring a groundbreaking new law in Brazil. Known as Bob Coveiro, meaning 'gravedigger' in Portuguese, the loyal companion became a beloved fixture at the graveyard, bringing comfort to mourners until his death in 2021.
After attending his owner's funeral, Bob refused to leave the cemetery, even when family members attempted to take him home. He was given a small green dog house and became known for accompanying funeral processions and playing with grieving visitors, helping them find moments of joy during difficult times.
The new law, which took effect on Tuesday, recognizes the 'emotional bond' between pets and their families. It allows cats and dogs to be buried in family graves throughout São Paulo state, provided sanitary standards are met. Representative Eduardo Nóbrega, one of the law's authors, stated: 'What began as a story of love and loyalty has turned into public policy.' Brazil has the world's third-largest pet population with 160 million animal companions.
