London Zoo Opens New Animal Hospital with Mystery Donation

London Zoo will soon open a state-of-the-art animal hospital, thanks to a £20 million gift from an anonymous donor. This is the largest donation the zoo has ever received.
Visitors will be able to watch live veterinary procedures through a viewing gallery. They can see everything from penguin health checks to ultrasounds on pregnant aardvarks, and even post-mortems on dolphins and porpoises. These procedures have never been shown publicly in the UK before.
The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), which runs the zoo, is celebrating its 200th anniversary today. The organization hopes the new Wildlife Health Centre will demonstrate the value of its conservation work. However, some critics question whether keeping animals in captivity is ethical, even with excellent medical care.
ZSL says most procedures will be routine checks. They use "cooperative care," training animals to participate in their own healthcare by rewarding them with food. The centre will also train wildlife vets from around the world and study how diseases spread between animals and humans.
