For years, Japanese football fans have been praised for cleaning up stadiums after World Cup matches. They collect trash with bags and leave the stands spotless. This behavior has won admiration worldwide.
However, this time they are facing criticism at home. When photos of Japanese fans cleaning stadiums went viral, some people noticed a problem. These men clean in public but often do not help with housework at home. A popular social media post showed this double standard: a man picking up litter at a stadium, then the same man relaxing on his sofa at home while his wife does all the chores.
The issue is serious in Japan. According to data, Japanese women spend over three hours daily on unpaid household work, while men spend only 47 minutes. This is the lowest among developed countries. In families with young children, the gap is even bigger. Women spend more than seven hours on housework daily, while men spend less than two hours.
Despite the criticism, many people still support the stadium cleanup tradition. Some fans from other countries, like Portugal, have started doing the same thing.
