Japan Earthquake Hits Kumamoto, Killing at Least 13

A major earthquake struck Kumamoto prefecture on Japan's southern island of Kyushu on Tuesday afternoon. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said at least 13 people had died, while rescue workers continued to search damaged sites.
The Japan Meteorological Agency first measured the earthquake at magnitude 7.1. The US Geological Survey later gave a magnitude of 6.8. Different early measurements are common because scientists need time to collect and analyse more information.
The earthquake damaged roads, caused power cuts and disrupted train services across Kyushu. BBC News reported that about 36,700 households lost electricity. The tremors also damaged parts of the historic Kumamoto Castle, including sections of its stone walls.
Officials issued a tsunami warning just after the quake, then lifted it within two hours. The meteorological agency also recorded more than 60 aftershocks. These smaller earthquakes can add danger to already damaged buildings, so people are being urged to follow local safety advice.
