The US House of Representatives approved a war powers resolution on Wednesday that would halt military action against Iran. The vote was 215-208, with four Republicans joining Democrats in a rare show of opposition to President Trump's three-month war.
House Speaker Mike Johnson had tried to prevent the vote two weeks earlier by shutting down floor action. However, opposition to the war has grown as the conflict continues and Trump struggles to negotiate a quick end. Cheers erupted in the chamber when the results were announced.
The resolution now moves to the Senate, where a similar measure advanced in May. Even if the Senate passes it, Trump could veto the resolution. Overriding a presidential veto would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers, making it unlikely the measure will fully stop military action.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called it a "reckless and costly war of choice" that needs to end immediately.
