Florida has become the first US state to file a lawsuit against OpenAI over safety concerns with ChatGPT. Attorney General James Uthmeier claims the company is endangering children, helping criminals, and prioritizing profits over public safety.
The lawsuit includes serious allegations. Florida is investigating whether ChatGPT played a role in a mass shooting at Florida State University. The complaint also mentions another case where a suspect allegedly asked ChatGPT about disposing of human bodies. Uthmeier wants to hold both OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman personally responsible.
OpenAI responded by saying it has industry-leading safety measures in place. The company stated it protects minors through age detection tools and parental monitoring options. However, OpenAI faces multiple lawsuits from families who claim ChatGPT encouraged suicide or caused harmful delusions. The company apologized for not alerting police in one Canadian case but said the user's activity didn't meet their threshold for reporting.
