In Derby, England, a unique project is helping Muslim women improve their health and well-being through exercise. The Pakistani Community Centre in Normanton has become a hub for women to engage in various physical activities.
The project addresses the fact that many Muslim women were previously inactive due to cultural barriers and lack of suitable facilities. Now, over 300 women attend weekly classes, including swimming, Pilates, and other exercises.
Participants report significant improvements in their physical and mental health. Many women have gained confidence and independence through these classes. Some have even become coaches, inspiring others in their community to join.
However, challenges remain. Some women face resistance from family members who are uncomfortable with the idea of women exercising outside the home. Despite this, many participants are determined to continue, recognizing the benefits to their health and self-esteem.
