A major power project between Ireland and the United Kingdom faced an unexpected challenge from Harry Potter fans. The Greenlink interconnector uses a 125-mile underwater cable connecting County Wexford in Ireland to Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Freshwater West beach is famous among Harry Potter fans because it was the filming location for Dobby's death scene. Visitors have created a memorial with pebbles and messages at the site. When the project manager announced that the underground cable would pass through this tribute site, the company received hundreds of protest calls.
The company decided to change the route to avoid the memorial. Interestingly, the project also passes near real Bronze Age archaeological remains. The National Trust, which manages the area, had previously allowed the Dobby tribute to remain but asked visitors to stop leaving socks and other items due to environmental concerns.
