Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced plans to ban social media for users under 15 years old. She argues that these platforms are negatively impacting children's mental health and development.
The proposed law would prohibit social media use for children under 15, with an option for parents to approve usage from age 13. Frederiksen expressed concern about rising rates of anxiety and depression among young people, attributing this partly to social media use.
The Danish government has already taken steps to limit phone use in schools. Frederiksen cited statistics showing that many young boys are not socializing in person, suggesting this is due to excessive smartphone use.
This move aligns Denmark with other countries taking action to protect children online. Australia, for instance, has passed a law banning social media for children under 16, while Norway is considering similar measures.
