Chincoteague's 100th Pony Swim

Sunday, 03 August, 2025138 words2 minutes
Chincoteague Island marked a significant milestone this week with its 100th annual pony swim. Thousands of spectators gathered to witness over 100 wild ponies make their traditional swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island.
The event, which began at 8:06 a.m., was assisted by the Saltwater Cowboys, local firemen who volunteer to guide the ponies. Within just five minutes, the ponies had successfully crossed the Assateague Channel and reached Chincoteague's shore.
Following the swim, the ponies paraded through the town before heading to the Chincoteague Carnival Grounds for the annual auction. This event serves a dual purpose: it raises funds for the local fire department and helps manage the pony population. The pony swim has become a beloved tradition, attracting visitors from far and wide, many of whom were inspired by the famous 'Misty of Chincoteague' book series.
