China Car Exports Jump 73% in May

China's passenger car exports increased dramatically by 73% in May 2026, reaching approximately 809,000 vehicles compared to the same period last year. This growth was driven largely by rising global interest in electric vehicles.
The surge in EV popularity comes as gasoline and diesel prices have climbed due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for more than half of China's car exports in May, with about 435,000 units shipped overseas—more than double the previous year's figure.
Chinese automakers like BYD are aggressively expanding into international markets across Latin America, Asia, and Europe. This overseas push comes at a crucial time, as domestic car sales in China have declined for seven consecutive months. BYD alone exported over 160,000 vehicles in May, representing an 80% increase from last year, and aims to sell 1.5 million cars abroad in 2026.
