Namibia is facing a severe challenge as a massive wildfire burns through Etosha National Park, one of Africa's largest game reserves. The fire, which began on September 22, has already consumed about a third of the park's territory. In response, the government has deployed 540 soldiers and helicopters to combat the blaze.
The fire poses a significant threat to the park's rich biodiversity, including its 114 mammal species and 340 bird species. Elephants, lions, giraffes, and endangered black rhinos are among the animals at risk. While no human casualties have been reported, an unknown number of animals may have perished.
Strong winds and dry vegetation are contributing to the rapid spread of the fire. The authorities are working tirelessly to contain the blaze and protect the park, which is a major tourist attraction drawing about 200,000 visitors annually.
