Scientists have identified a new species of giant dinosaur from fossils found in Thailand. The nagatitan is the largest dinosaur ever discovered in South-East Asia. It belonged to the sauropod family, which were long-necked plant-eating dinosaurs.
The nagatitan was enormous. It measured 27 meters in length, making it longer than a diplodocus. It weighed 27 tonnes, which is as much as nine adult Asian elephants. This massive creature lived between 100 and 120 million years ago, about 40 million years before the tyrannosaurus rex.
Researchers from the UK and Thailand found the fossils beside a pond in north-eastern Thailand ten years ago. The dinosaur's name comes from "naga," a serpent in South-East Asian folklore, and "titan," referring to Greek gods. The discovery helps scientists understand how ancient climate changes allowed such gigantic dinosaurs to develop.
Thailand has proven to be rich in dinosaur fossils. The nagatitan is the 14th dinosaur species to be named in the country, making Thailand possibly the third most abundant location for dinosaur remains in Asia.
