Bank of England Redesigns Banknotes

The Bank of England is planning a major redesign of its banknotes for the first time in over 50 years. Since 1970, these notes have featured notable historical figures, but this tradition might change.

The bank is now asking the public for their opinions on new themes for the banknotes. Some suggested themes include nature, innovation, or significant historical events. This could mean future notes might display British birds, famous bridges, or even traditional foods like bangers and mash.

Victoria Cleland, the Bank's chief cashier, emphasizes that banknotes are more than just a means of payment. They represent the national identity and offer a chance to celebrate the UK. The public can submit their ideas through the Bank's website or by post until the end of July.

While cash use has decreased with evolving payment technologies, the Bank remains committed to providing cash for those who wish to use it. The final decision on the new designs will be made by the Bank's governor.
