Australia has confirmed its first case of the H5N1 bird flu strain, marking a significant milestone as the virus has now reached every continent on Earth.
The disease was discovered in a brown skua, a migratory seabird, on a remote beach in Western Australia. The bird was found at Cape Le Grand National Park near Esperance, approximately 700 kilometers southeast of Perth. Agriculture Minister Julie Collins announced the discovery on Saturday, stating that authorities had been preparing for this event.
The H5N1 strain is highly contagious and spreads rapidly among bird populations. While it primarily affects birds, it can occasionally infect other animals. Human infections remain extremely uncommon and usually occur through direct contact with sick animals.
A second suspected case involves a southern petrel found exhausted on another Esperance beach. However, officials report no evidence of widespread deaths at this time. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and expect to know within days if the virus has spread to other animal populations in Australia.
