AI Helps Doctors Diagnose Faster

A new AI software has been introduced in West Yorkshire NHS Trust to help doctors interpret chest X-rays more quickly. This technology aims to speed up the diagnosis of conditions such as lung cancer and infections, allowing patients to receive treatment faster.
The AI acts as a 'co-pilot' for doctors, capable of identifying up to 85 different findings in minutes. Dr. Fahmid Chowdhury, the project's clinical lead, believes this will significantly benefit patients by flagging abnormal X-rays more quickly.
While the AI has already proven its worth by highlighting abnormalities that might be missed at first glance, Dr. Chowdhury emphasizes that it won't replace doctors. Instead, it will work alongside them, supporting healthcare workers in making informed decisions. The project is part of a larger initiative backed by the NHS AI Diagnostic Fund.
