AI Designs Viruses That Kill Bacteria

A research team has used AI to design new bacteriophages: viruses that infect bacteria rather than humans. The work focused on a small, well-studied phage that attacks E. coli.
The AI model was trained on genetic information from many phages. It then suggested new complete DNA sequences. The team selected designs to make and test in the laboratory. Sixteen of the tested designs were able to reproduce in E. coli and stop the bacteria from growing.
The result is a proof of concept, not a new medical treatment. It may eventually support phage therapy, an approach that uses phages against bacterial infections, including infections that no longer respond well to antibiotics. The experiments used bacteria-infecting viruses, not viruses that infect people.
Researchers and biosecurity experts also say the advance needs responsible oversight. A technology that can help develop treatments could also lower barriers to risky biological design if it is used without safeguards.
