AI and Teens: A New Study

A recent study by Common Sense Media has shed light on how teenagers are using AI companions. These are digital characters that teens can chat with using text or voice.
The study found that nearly 75% of U.S. teens have used an AI tool at least once for activities like seeking advice, flirting, or having deep conversations. More than half of the teens surveyed use these AI companions regularly, at least a few times a month.
However, the study also revealed that most teens still prefer human interaction. About 80% of respondents said they prioritize real friendships over AI interactions. Despite this, there are some concerns. One-third of teens have discussed serious matters with AI instead of real people, and some have shared personal information with these digital companions.
Experts worry about the impact of AI companions on teens' social development and data privacy. They recommend that no one under 18 should use these AI tools due to potential risks.
