The United States is using the death penalty more than before. In 2025, there were more executions than any year since 2009. This is a big problem.
Many people who are executed are poor or have mental problems. They often did not have good lawyers. People are more likely to get the death penalty if they killed a white person. Sometimes, innocent people are executed. More than 200 people on death row have been proven innocent since 1973.
Executions can be very cruel. When Alabama executed Anthony Boyd with nitrogen gas, he suffered for 30 minutes. Most countries in the world have stopped using the death penalty. Countries like Canada, Mexico, and all of Western Europe do not execute people anymore. The United States is now similar to countries like Iran and North Korea in this way.
