Seven million people get cancer every year. But doctors say we can stop many of these cancers.
A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that 37% of cancers come from things we can avoid. These include smoking cigarettes, some infections, and dirty air.
Some cancers happen because we get older or because of our family genes. But many cancers can be prevented. Smoking causes 3.3 million cancers. Infections cause 2.3 million cancers. Drinking alcohol causes 700,000 cancers.
Doctors say this is good news. We can do something to help people stay healthy. Countries that stop smoking and give vaccines are already helping people avoid cancer.
