American schools are changing their ideas about technology. A few years ago, schools wanted every student to have a laptop or tablet. They spent billions of dollars on devices and learning apps. Now, many parents and teachers think there are too many screens in classrooms.
Los Angeles is a big city with many schools. It became the first major school district to stop giving devices to very young students. The district will not give devices to children until second grade. It will also block YouTube and ban devices at lunch and recess.
Many parents are worried. They try to limit screens at home, but schools require screens for homework and classwork. Students watch videos, play games, and get distracted during class. Parents and teachers want children to use more paper and books instead of screens.
